The Gray Stone Day Mock Trial team competes within the North Carolina Advocates for Justice High School Mock Trial Competition. This is a nation-wide educational program that provides an opportunity for students to learn about the U.S. legal system from legal professionals. This hands-on approach is a fun and effective way for students to learn about the judicial process and the fundamental importance of the jury system. The mock trials take place at courthouses across the state while students take on the roles of attorneys, witnesses, bailiffs, courtroom artists and journalists, creating a lively and realistic courtroom drama. As part of this interactive learning experience, local attorneys volunteer to work alongside teacher coaches, advising student teams as they prepare for competition. No outside research is necessary because all case materials and rules of evidence are provided. Regional and state competitions take place on two Saturdays during the spring semester in 10 cities throughout NC.
This past year the Gray Stone Mock Trial team won their regional and state competitions, which allowed them to compete in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the National High School Mock Trial Competition. The teams in previous years have ranked very high among regional, national, and international competitors. Tryouts are held in the fall of each school year.
