Student Life

College Planning - Welcome

Welcome to Gray Stone’s Guidance Department! This department consists of Mrs. Crum, Mr. Miller and Mrs. Sherrill. Gray Stone’s college guidance program helps students identify colleges and universities that best match their needs and abilities, and assists them through the college admissions process.

Although the "formal" college search begins during the junior year, the process truly begins when a student enters Gray Stone. Starting in the 9th grade, students participate in classroom guidance activities designed to help them plan for their future by making good choices and developing their talents both inside and outside of school.  Presentations are given throughout the year for students and parents on topics ranging from the college admissions process to financial aid.

Ninth and tenth grade students are encouraged to concentrate on establishing their academic record and exploring activities that interest them.  Tenth graders especially are urged to visit college campuses whenever they get a chance to begin developing a feel for their college preferences.  By the end of 10th grade, students should have a pool of around a dozen colleges that they are considering.  Additionally, this is the appropriate time to review standardized test scores. PSAT results from sophomore year provide information that can be used to help improve performance on subsequent tests.

Please see Mrs. Crum’s powerpoint, “Building Your High School Resume” for more information on how to make the most of your 9th and 10th grade years at Gray Stone.
