Mock Trial Wins States, Going to Nationals!

By Raegan Perry

CHARLOTTE, NC- Seven excited students and two very nervous coaches entered the court room with anticipation and determination. Raegan Perry opens the Prosecution with an opening statement, where she said, “The author of this crime is the defendant and it’s up to the jury to see that he doesn’t get away with it.” Kaitlin Price ends the trial by telling the jury that “they must write the final chapter of the killer’s crime.” The Prosecution delivered an amazing performance in the first round of the state mock trial championship last weekend.

As the competition progressed, the Gray Stone Mock Trial team gave it their all. The mock trial team had to compete twice on Saturday for the first two rounds. Sunday morning, the team had to go against one of the Mock Trial power houses in round III, Charlotte Country Day School. With standout performance by freshman, Eldon Zacek III, playing the part of a Doctor of Parasomnia, the team was able to win one of their toughest rounds this season.

Not only did the mock trial team win all three of the rounds, but they never lost a ballot. In mock trial, real trial attorneys and judges serve as the jury. There are typically three jury members, who are also the judges of the competition. Each jury member has a ballot where they score each performance, including the opening and closing statements and the direct and cross examination. The Gray Stone Mock Trial team never lost a single ballot this whole season, including their trip to Asheville, NC for the regional competition.

The team went against Raleigh Charter in the final championship round. Gray Stone was given a choice of arguing the defense or prosecution. The team decided to argue the defense. Sam Hurley, Raegan Perry and Kaitlin Price were the attorneys. Eldon Zacek III, Danny Horner, Katie Hopkins and Caitlin Corbett were the witnesses. Anna Morrison is an Assistant D.A. from Union County and serves as the team’s attorney advisor. Scott Wilson is the coach.

Gray Stone’s Mock Trial team will compete in the national competition that is to be held in the new Charlotte courthouse on May 18-20.
