Politics at Gray Stone Day School

What Students have to say

By Raegan Perry

MISENHEIMER, NC- As a Gray Stone student, I have noticed several people wearing t-shits that support the Presidential hopefuls and have overheard some heated debates and some persuasive arguments over the candidates. This piqued my interest. McCain has locked up the delegates needed for the GOP nomination, but for the Democrats, the fireworks between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton continue. Democrats have begun to take a stance on who they will vote for: Obama or Clinton. It appears that Clinton is still in the race and will prevail in her struggle for the super delegates and the presidential nomination.

What would students and teachers say if I gave them the choice of the two prominent candidates for the Democratic Party and asked their opinion? Well, here’s what some of them had to say about the Democratic hopefuls: (there were some colorful answers)

Obama vs. Clinton:

"I would vote for Clinton, because I support her view on the war more than Obama’s. Plus, she has more experience.”

-Owen Schmeige

“Obama, because Hillary is a woman.”

-Steven Smith

“I won’t vote for either because I don’t support universal healthcare.”

-Nathan Connell

“Obama, because Clinton is not capable; she’s fickle. Obama is steadier and more open.”

-Megan Yost

 “I don’t trust either.”

-Mrs. Dassler

Clinton because of her healthcare plan and her experience.”

-Carson Blackwelder

“Obama, because I don’t want another Clinton in the White House.” -Rachel Mobley

Clinton, because I think Barack Hussein Obama is a racist. (Trinity Church of Christ.)”

-Jarrett Burr

Clinton, because she has more experience and is less radical.”

-Kaely Lykins

“Obama, because he has better reforms and doesn’t play dirty politics.”

-Richard Scott

“Obama, because Oprah’s got it right. And because Obama is a family man.”

-Grady Bigger

Clinton, because she appeals to more women.”

-Megan Howard

“Neither, I’d rather move to Canada!”

-Sheridan Wenzel

“Obama, because America wouldn’t listen to Hillary (a woman).”

-Josh Casper

“Neither, because they bicker too much.”

-Mrs. Nance

“Obama, because he is a minority and I like his standpoints. I frequently visit

his website and I support his ideas for energy.”

-Heather Van Wallendhel

Clinton, because Obama is un-American. He refuses to wear an American flag pin and he put his hand over his heart for the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem!”

-Jeffery Harrington

 “Neither.”

-Molly Peel

“Obama, because Hillary lets Bill do her job for her.”

-Matt Slingerland

“Obama, because Hillary is all about publicity.

-Taylor Woods

“As a woman, I lean towards Hillary… and as a young, new voter, I lean towards Obama. I’m split!”

-Keely Herron

“Obama, because he is actually capable. He has better ideas and I don’t like Hillary’s healthcare plan.”

-Cally Womick

“I will exercise my right to write in a name. It would be like choosing the lesser of two evils.”

-Mr. Wilson

Clinton, because she already has eight years of White House experience. I like her plans for healthcare and energy.

-Jenna Hall

“Hillary, because I think that Obama will have too much pressure from minorities and I think that Hillary has more experience, because of her husband, Bill.”

-Nancy Pribble

The TARS (The Teenage Republicans) club plans to hold a voter registration during homeroom on April 18th for students who are or will be eligible to vote in November. They also invite others who wish to register to vote (such as parents, teachers or Pfeiffer students.) The TARS have been meeting regularly to discuss politics. They have also volunteered to put up signs and raise funds to support fellow Republicans. Jarrett Burr is the president of the TARS, and you may recognize his last name because his brother, Justin Burr, is running for a spot in the NC House.

The TARS, however, is not the only club interested in politics at Gray Stone. The Young Progressives have been meeting frequently. The Progressives were the ones responsible for adorning the walls with orange posters that had information about each candidate (on the Republican and Democratic side) running for President. They included the key issues and that candidate’s stance on those issues. The Progressives will meet today to discuss upcoming projects. Heather VanWallendael and Cally Womick are the leaders of the Progressives.

Gray Stone students care about the issues in the world today and that is evident in their concern for politics. Whether it’s talking to Mr. Wilson about global warming or debating the need to protect endangered species in Mr. Walter’s class, students are informed and conversant.
